IOP Kenwood KGP Setup

I/O Processor Kenwood KGP Setup

Setting up Your Base Station

  1. The Kenwood mobile radio must be properly programmed (see Kenwood’s instructions).

  2. Install the KCT-20 cable into the Kenwood base station radio (see Kenwood’s instructions) and connect the other end to the KGP-1B modem.

  3. Connect the KGP-1B modem to your computer’s Com port using the DB-9 serial cable.

  4. Plug the RASTRAC "Hardware Key" into the computer’s Parallel/USB port.

Your base station hardware is now ready to receive data from your mobile units.

Setting up Your Mobile Unit(s)

  1. The Kenwood mobile radio must be properly programmed (see Kenwood’s instructions).

  2. Mount the Kenwood KGP-1A mobile modem in a suitable location.

  3. Install the KCT-20 cable into the Kenwood radio (see Kenwood’s instructions) and connect the other end to the KGP-1A modem.

  4. Plug the GPS antenna into the modem. The GPS antenna must be mounted where it is able to "see" the sky (ideally on the vehicle roof). Note: A New KGP-1A modem received from Kenwood may take up to 1 hour (possibly longer) to get a valid GPS location fix.

Your mobile units are now ready to begin transmitting.

  1. Set up the RASTRAC I/O Processor (IOP) to support your KGP hardware. Select the RASTRAC I/O Processor from the Windows task bar. Select "Edit... Configuration." The Input/Output Configuration dialog box will open.

  2. Select the Com Port that you have plugged the KGP-1B into on the back of the computer. Make sure the other settings are: Parity "None", Stop Bits "1", Baud Rate "9600", Data Bits "8", Hardware "Simplex Radio", Protocol "Kenwood KGP". Click the "Close IOP When RASTRAC Closes" button and then click on "Accept."

  3. Select "Edit…Configuration" and then click on Protocol "Properties." When the KGP Interface dialog box opens, click on the "Base" tab. Click on the "Get Base Setup" button. The base modem should respond with a dialog box giving you the base setup. If it does not, you need to check your connections between the base modem and the computer or your connection from the base modem to the radio (the radio supplies power to the base modem, so make sure the radio is turned on). The important part of this response is the logic level. It should be: 0x00 for trunking radios (e.g. 840, 940, 941) or 0x33 for conventional radios (e.g. 760, 860). If the logic level is correct, skip to step #5.

  4. Remove the back cover from the KGP modem and set the "Hdwr Config" switch to "On". Click the "Logic" tab at the top of the "Kenwood KGP Interface" window. Click on the arrow to select the proper "Radio Type" from the drop down list and click on the "Set Base Logic Level". The IOP will remind you that the "Hdwr Config" switch must be "On". Click "OK". The modem will then respond with a dialog box giving you the new logic level.

  5. Click on the "Slot" tab. Click on the arrow to select the proper "Radio Type" from the drop down list and click on the "Set Slot Interval". Note: Certain radios may require changes to the standard slot times. Also, some slot interval (timing) settings may need to be adjusted due to different latency times in the communications system. Contact Kenwood Technical Support for the proper slot interval settings (or experiment with them on our own). Note: Setting the slot interval should have cause the base radio to "key-up" and transmit. If it does not, your KCT-20 cable is not properly installed or your Kenwood radio is not properly programmed. . Contact Kenwood Technical Support for these issues.

  6. Set up each Kenwood KGP-1A mobile modem. Click on the "ID Setup" tab. This control panel is where you will set the ID for each of your mobile modems. Enter the serial number for the selected KGP-1A modem in the appropriate box (it is the second part of the barcode number). Enter a group ID (Usually "1") and a Unit ID (any number between 1 and 255). Click on the "Set Vehicle ID" button. This should cause the base radio to send a signal to the mobile modem that will respond with a "Setup Complete" dialog box. If the mobile unit does not respond, check the connection from the mobile modem to the radio and make sure the radio is programmed properly and contains the latest firmware. Note: The RASTRAC vehicle ID is a combination of "K" + Group ID + Mobile ID. For example, group 1 and unit 1 will be K001001 (you must use all 3 digits - zero padded). If no response is received from the mobile unit, follow the instructions (step #4) for setting up the logic level with the exception of clicking on "Set Mobile..." rather than "Set Base...". Also, make sure the slot intervals have been set for each KGP-1A mobile modem.

  7. Set up RASTRAC to accept data from your vehicles. Select "Vehicles... Settings...’"from the RASTRAC menu. Here you must enter the ID of the mobile modem for each vehicle in your fleet (e.g. K001001, K001002, K001003, etc...). If the vehicle’s ID is not in the list, RASTRAC will ignore any information about that vehicle. If your system is going to support vehicle polling, each vehicle you enter in the "Settings" list must also have a selected IOP or Server in the ‘IOP and Server List…’. You must also select a "Talk Mode:" (e.g. Parallel), if you want to send commands to the vehicle. See Vehicle... Settings...
