Search

Tools...Search... (Shift+S)

When you execute the Search command, you are shown a dialog box containing a map and search tabs for finding Addresses, Places, Vehicles, Points, Advisories, and Lat/Lon (Latitude/Longitude) locations. On each tab, if visible, the map will automatically scroll the desired location into view when you click the 'Search' button. Clicking the 'Hide' button will hide the map making the search dialog much smaller. If you would like to show the map again, click the 'Show' button. Once an item is found, the 'Add Point' button will add a point at the currently selected item's location to the point database. The 'Center Map' button will allow you to center a slected map on the currently selected item's location. You will be prompted to select one of the maps to center on the point. Each tab is explained below in greater detail.

Address

On the Address tab, you will be prompted for the street address, city, state, zip code, and counrty for the address you wish to find. If all fields are not known the closest match will be displayed in a list (several addresses may be listed to choose from).

The 'Matched' section will show what fields were found during the search. It will list the: state, zip code, city, street, street direction (N, NE, S, etc...), and street type (St., Rd., Ave., etc...). The 'Not' section will show all fields the were not found during the search. Look at which fields were not found to see how accurate the address lookup actually was. The Results list will contain a list of alternate addresses that were found during the search. You can select one of the other addresses in the list and it will then be displayed on the map.

You don’t have to fill in all of the fields for a search. If you enter just the state field, then the map will zoom out to display the entire state. The more information you are able to provide, the better the search will be. You can also enter intersections or cross streets on PW_Street maps. Use an '&' between street names in the ‘Street Address’ field. For instance, if you are looking for the intersection of Dawn and Thunderbird, you would enter: Dawn '&' Thunderbird, Lago Vista, TX, 78645. The map window would then display the street intersection of Dawn and Thunderbird. Cross street intersections are only supported for PW_Street maps (not all addresses work well for cross streets).

Note: Generally address lookup works very well. However, address lookup is not an exact science. The system will search the database for the best match possible. If there isn’t enough information, or the given information does not match the database structure, then the address search may not be as accurate as expected. Also, the street block address is calculated from a block address range (which may be defined in the database as 3400-3499 but in actuality the block addresses are from 3401-3428). That is why the address shown may not be the actual address of the desired location. Therefore, some addresses will be fairly close and others may not be, depending on how accurate the particular street segment (block) was defined in the database.

Place

On the Place tab, you will be prompted for the place category, subcategory, and name. The Place tab should only appear if you have the Geo Database enabled (Tools...Database Connections...Geo Database). The Place tab allows you to search your Geo Database for points of interest (i.e. Gas Stations, Wells, Buildings, Fire Hydrants, etc...). Of course, whatever you are searching for must first be imported into your Geo Database. When you click the 'Search' button any item in your Geo Database that maches the criteria provided will be displayed in the Results list.

Vehicle

On the Vehicle tab, you will be prompted for the name of the vehicle you wish to find. When you click the 'Search' button any vehicle whose ID or Alias contians the string entered in the Vehicle Name field will be listed in the Results list. When a vehicle is selected the information about the vehicle will be shown in the Details section. You can also right-click on the vehicle in the list and get a drop-down menu to select other actions (e.g. Get Position, Delete, Settings...). Click the 'List Attributes' button to display a list of defined vehicle attributes. You can also type 'attributes' in the vehicle name and click the 'Search' button to get a list of attributes defined. Once attributes are listed you can right-click on an entry and select 'List Vehciles' to show a list of all vehicles that refference the selected attribute (e.g. select 'SUPERVISORS' from the attribute list and it will display all vehicles that have a reference to the 'SUPERVISORS' attribute).

Point

On the Point tab, you will be prompted for the name of the point you wish to find. When you click the 'Search' button any point whose name contians the string entered in the Point Name field will be listed in the Results list. When a point is selected the type, address, and description of the point will be shown in the appropriate fields. You can also right-click on the point in the list and get a drop-down menu to select other actions (e.g. Find, Delete, Settings...).

Advisory

On the Advisory tab, you will be prompted for the name of the advisory you wish to find. When you click the 'Search' button the map will center on the advisory that you selected (if the advisory is defined with a map region and not an event). When an advisory is selected the details will be displayed in the description section. You can also right-click on an advisory in the list and select the 'Settings...' menu to go directly to the advisory settings for the selected advisory.

Lat/Lon

On the Lat/Lon tab, you will be prompted for the latitude and longitude for the location you wish to find. When you click the 'Search' button the map will center on the latitude/longitude location that you entered.
