What is FirstNet?

FirstNet is the nationwide public safety broadband network, services and solutions that are dedicated to First Responders and those that support them. It is more than a network, including advanced services, applications and purpose-built devices.

Due to communications challenges during the response to the 9/11 terrorist attacks, the 9/11 Commission recommended the establishment of a single, interoperable network for public safety. With Congress establishing the First Responder Network Authority in 2012 and AT&T being awarded the contract to provide the capabilities for FirstNet to be built in 2017, FirstNet is fulfilling the concerns and desires of public safety, and is tailored specifically to meet their needs as they save lives and protect communities across the nation.

Why FirstNet?

FirstNet Benefits to First Responders and those that support them.

  1. Highly Reliable Network Coverage
This network gets a head start by launching on the nation’s best data network* — featuring more than 99% population coverage.
  2. First Priority®
When disaster strikes and networks can be congested, first responders using FirstNet remain first in line, with priority and preemption across our network at no additional charge. First responders get the access they need to keep the lines of communication open — when it matters most.
  3. Trusted Security and Resiliency
Designed with heightened security in mind to help resist physical and cyber threats. Ruggedized to help withstand power outages, and backed by a dynamic, highly trained disaster recovery organization.
  4. Public Safety Apps
A dedicated public safety app store offers highly secure and relevant first responder applications, delivering critical interoperability and the ability to talk with team members from other agencies, states, or local rescue teams. All apps pass a rigorous vetting process that focuses on meeting superior standards, enhancing safety and situational awareness.
  5. Dedicated Support
Your dedicated technical support is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year, and is staffed with highly experienced, trained professionals who have experience in emergency communications and understand the demands of public safety.
  6. No Throttling
There’s no throttling for FirstNet subscribers anywhere in the U.S.
